 Award Overview


The Society for Invertebrate Pathology offers support for students, post-docs and scientists from lower income countries to participate in the annual meetings. For detailed information per award, click on the links in the text below.

 

Which awards are available for participants?

 

Students can apply for Division Travel Awards, which will be evaluated by SIP jurors in spring and recipients will usually be notified around May 1. The deadline for this award is April 15, 2024. All applicants for Division awards who are submitting an oral presentation will also be considered for the Mauro Martignoni Award.

 

Students can also compete for either Best Student Oral or Best Poster Presentation Award at the annual meetings. This opportunity is open to all student presenters, including recipients of Division Travel Awards.

 

Scientists (including students and post-docs) from less developed countries are eligible to apply for the Chris J. Lomer Memorial Award. The deadline for this award is April 15, 2024.

 

Scientists in the early stage of their career (including post-docs) may apply for the Early Career Award, if they fulfil the criteria. The deadline for this award is extended to March 31, 2024.
Please note: if you apply this year, and do not get the Early Career Award, you will be able to apply again next year if you still qualify.

 

All applicants for awards also need to submit their abstract(s) separately to the meeting organization.


Division Travel Award and the Martignoni Award

Who can apply for a Student Travel Award and the Martignoni Award?


  • Applicants must be enrolled in a university degree program (BS, MS, PhD) or have graduated from a MSc or PhD program during the calendar year of the award presentation. Students who graduate (MSc or PhD) during the year of the meeting are still eligible for awards!
  • Applicants need NOT be a member of the SIP or of any Division sponsoring a travel award.
  • Award applicants must submit an abstract of their work and must present this work in person (oral or poster) at the Society's Annual Meeting.
  • Applications for all travel awards (both poster and oral presentations) should pertain to topics in invertebrate pathology and/or microbial/biological control.
  • Applicants should specify in which SIP Division they are applying for a travel award.
  • Applicants must provide an e-mail address for communication.
  • Each applicant is eligible to receive only one travel award per year.

Chris Lomer Award

Who can Apply?


This award honors the memory of the late Chris Lomer for his work and enthusiastic leadership while carrying out microbial control research in less developed countries. Qualified applicants, including but not limited to students, from less developed countries are invited to apply for the Chris J. Lomer Award. Only applicants from “Low to lower middle income” countries may apply.  Before you apply please visit: World Bank classification of counties to determine if your country is listed.


Applicants for the Chris J. Lomer Award:

  • Have at least a BSc or an equivalent degree
  • Should be working or studying at a university or research institution that carries out research, this includes field stations, NGO’s and museums
  • Should be working in scientific areas within the discipline of the SIP (invertebrate pathology and microbial control)
  • SIP membership is not required
  • Should submit an abstract of their work and must present this work in person (oral or poster) at the Society's Annual Meeting
  • NOTE: Scientists with citizenship/residency does not meet the World Bank classification of “low or medium low income” who are conducting research in a country under this category (at the time of the application) will not be considered for this award.

SIP Early Career Award

Who can apply?


The Council of the Society of Invertebrate Pathology has created an Early Career Scientist award to recognize outstanding contributions from invertebrate pathologists who are in the early stage of their scientific/academic career. 


Early career scientists are eligible for this award if they meet the following requirements:

  • The nominee has made significant contributions to the field of invertebrate pathology through research, teaching, and/or outreach after completion of his/her PhD research.
  • The PhD degree of the nominee must have been granted no more than eight years prior to the submission deadline for this award.
  • The nominee is a current member of SIP and, has been a member for at least the past two years. Nominees with active involvement in the society (e.g. has hold division positions, committee membership, meeting organisation) will be viewed positively.
